You can not simply copy original movies from DVDs or Blu-ray disks to your hard drive and run them as usual. Their AACS and BD+ protection measures will prevent this. If you want to play your DVD movies from your hard drive or if you just want to create backups, MakeMKV will help you convert them to multiple .mkv files, regardless of their protection. The software lets you choose which titles to save and stream them to an online server as well.

MakeMKV is free and you can use it on various platforms, like Windows, Mac OS X or Linux. It will not take long to download and install the application and it will not use up your computer's resources. Furthermore, you will be glad to know that MakeMKV does not require additional software or codecs.

If your DVD is loaded, the software will read it and process its titles immediately, when you launch it. If there is no DVD in your drive, you may select a different device from a drop menu, located in the upper left area of the interface. Once it reads and processes a DVD's titles, the application will list them in a tree menu, where you can select them, along with their audio tracks and subtitles.

The options on the toolbar allow you to back up your DVD, save the selected titles as .mkv files or stream the movie to a server which you can specify on the software's main settings panel. MakeMKV is not limited to movies on DVDs. It is possible to load ISO images as well. If you have copied the contents of a DVD on your hard drive, you can load them, regardless if they are DVD, HD-DVD or Blu-ray video files. Besides the options on the interface, you will also find details, like duration, segment count or source title ID for each title.

Pros

MakeMKV's interface is simple and straightforward. You can load movies directly from a DVD or load DVD or Blu-ray files from your hard drive. The software can save individual titles as .mkv files and it is also capable of streaming the movie to a server of your choice.

Cons

Additional output formats would have been useful. Even if your DVD or Blu-ray movies are protected with the latest versions of AACS or BD+, MakeMKV lets you convert them without any effort.
